PBKS Team Preview: New Name, Better Fortunes for the Kings of Punjab?
It's been a while since Punjab has made it to the playoffs. In fact, the last time they were in a playoff game was in 2014. Since then 'n' number of captains and coaches have come and gone with the onus now on KL Rahul and Anil Kumble to steer them to at least a top-four finish. While they came close last year, the Punjab Kings would be disappointed by how things went initially for them. But with the additions of Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith adding much-needed variety in the bowling attack, is this the year Punjab Kings come good in the IPL? Here's some insight on how they can turn up in the IPL!Team Insight: Punjab has a few selection headaches, albeit pleasant ones. While KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal will resume their opening partnership at the top, Gayle might just get the nod over Dawid Malan. While Pooran will be key in the middle order, there's some concerns over the lack of experience in the bowling attack. Although Jhye is as good as they come, it is still his first IPL season, but he should prove to be a handful alongside Shami and possibly Arshdeep Singh.Strongest Possible XI*: Rahul (c,wk), Agarwal, Gayle, Pooran, Shahrukh, Hooda, Jhye, Allen, Bishnoi, Shami and ArshdeepPlayers To Watch Out For:Lokesh Rahul (46.70 Sixer Coins): The reigning Orange Cap holder, KL Rahul, indeed has a point to prove in this IPL. While his first two seasons in Punjab saw him score runs at a rate of knots, his IPL 2020 stint saw him play the anchor's role, which didn't go down too well among fans. In fact, his match score average was less than that of Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle. We all know what Rahul is capable of in this format. Given that he comes into this IPL on the back of some good form, he will be one to watch out for in the Sixer Market!Mohammed Shami (44.60 Sixer Coins): Punjab Kings' bowling attack wasn't too consistent, Shami was an expectational case. The fiery pacer picked up twenty wickets in fourteen games, which was among the top-ten wicket tallies. Although his price declined towards the end of the season, Shami peaked at 65 Sixer Coins per Share, holding him in good stead. While he comes into this IPL after an injury lay-off, his ability to nail the yorker is one that his fantasy shareholders wouldn't be tired of seeing. At 44.60 Sixer Coins per Share, Shami presents a decent case and if picked in the Real Market, can prove to be a shrewd acquisition.Chris Gayle (56.50 Sixer Coins): If ever there was a debate for the best export in the IPL, which is actually a debating point in our DEBATE SECTION, Chris Gayle is sure to have a compelling case and rightly so. He has the most hundreds among all players in the IPL and is still going strong at 41! Gayle scored 288 runs in seven outings for Punjab last season, and it is this kind of form that has earned him a spot in the West Indian side. But with Dawid Malan joining the fray, his place in the side is at some risk, although Gayle's PSL exploits should hand him the edge over Malan.Jhye Richardson (48.20 Sixer Coins): Last but not least, in our Sixer Preview series, we look into Jhye Richardson, the multi-million deal bagger who has already carved up a reputation as an elite bowler. Jhye Richardson is a one-of-a-kind talent who has all the skills in the bag. Aged just 24, Richardson recently won the award for the most wickets in BBL 2020-21 while averaging a match score of 67. In addition to his bowling exploits, Jhye's batting has gone up a notch in recent years, with his strike rate of 152 in his last two BBL seasons. With such a skilled operator in their ranks, surely Punjab would fancy their chances of glory this season!* - This is the author's opinion and has nothing to do with Sixer. The side may or may not be the final XI.
